Interpreting & Applying Test Results for ASD:

  • Social Communication Challenges:

- Assessment Result: Difficulty initiating or sustaining conversations, understanding nonverbal cues.

- EBP: Social Skills Training (SST) – Targeting specific communication goals, such as turn-taking and reading facial expressions.

  • Behavioral Challenges:

- Assessment Result: Exhibits disruptive behaviors or struggles with transitions.

- EBP: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) – Use of positive reinforcement strategies to decrease problem behaviors and teach adaptive behaviors.

  • Repetitive Behaviors or Restricted Interests:

- Assessment Result: Engages in repetitive movements, focuses narrowly on specific interests.

- EBP: Behavioral Interventions – Implementing functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and teaching replacement behaviors.

  • Sensory Processing Issues:

- Assessment Result: Over- or under-reactive to sensory stimuli (e.g., noise, textures).

- EBP: Sensory Integration Therapy – Developing tolerance and adaptive responses to sensory input in structured settings.

  • Executive Functioning Deficits:

- Assessment Result: Struggles with organization, planning, and flexibility.

- EBP: Visual Supports (e.g., visual schedules, task analysis) – Helping students manage tasks, transitions, and expectations.

  • Academic Skills Deficits:

- Assessment Result: Below-grade-level performance in reading, math, or writing.

- EBP: Direct Instruction – Structured, explicit teaching techniques to address academic gaps.

  • Emotional Regulation Challenges:

- Assessment Result: Difficulty managing frustration, anxiety, or anger.

- EBP: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Teaching coping strategies and self-regulation skills for emotional management.

  • Difficulty with Peer Interactions:

- Assessment Result: Challenges in making or maintaining friendships.

- EBP: Peer-Mediated Instruction and Intervention (PMII) – Training peers to engage and support social interaction skills.

  • Limited Functional Play Skills:

- Assessment Result: Does not engage in age-appropriate play or struggles with imaginative play.

- EBP: Pivotal Response Training (PRT) – Encouraging play through motivation and reinforcing natural learning opportunities.

  • Language Processing Issues:

- Assessment Result: Delayed or impaired language development, challenges with comprehension or expressive language.

- EBP: Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – Teaching alternative ways to communicate needs effectively.

By connecting the psychoeducational report to EBPs, you can tailor interventions to the specific needs identified, ensuring that services are both relevant and impactful for students with ASD. These connections ensure that the interventions directly address the specific areas identified in the ASD assessment, leading to more targeted and effective support.
